Death Statistics. 2024

In 2024, 67,524 deaths were registered in Catalonia, of which 33,611 (49.8%) were men and 33,913 (50.2%) were women. The crude mortality rate was 8.37 deaths per 1,000 inhabitants. Compared to 2023, there was a decrease of 138 deaths, which represents a reduction of 0.2% in percentage terms.

By areas of the Territorial Plan, the highest crude mortality rates were recorded in Les Terres de l'Ebre Area (11.47‰), the Central Counties Area (9.34‰) and the Ponent Area (9.25‰). On the other hand, the lowest were recorded in El Camp de Tarragona Area (8.13‰), the Girona Counties Area (8.24‰) and the Metropolitan Area (8.24‰).

By counties and Aran, the highest crude mortality rates were recorded in La Terra Alta (15.29‰), El Lluçanès (13.47‰) and El Ripollès (13.20‰); while the lowest were recorded in Aran (6.26‰), El Gironès (6.79‰) and La Cerdanya (7.01‰).

By age group, deaths were more numerous among the elderly. Until the age of 84, mortality among men was higher than that of women. The peak of male mortality was recorded between the age of 85 and 89 years (with 5,617 deaths), while the peak of female mortality was between the age of 90 and 94 (with 8,300 deaths). Specifically, by age (simple age), the highest peak of deaths was at the age of 90 years (2,954 deaths). In the case of men, the age with the most deaths was 87 years (1,273 deaths) and, in the case of women, 90 and 91 years (1,745 deaths for each age).

By months, the winter months were the ones with the highest mortality; specifically, January registered the maximum number of deaths with a total of 7,789, followed by December, with a total of 6,113. The months with the lowest mortality were September (4,748) and June (5,043).

By week, the annual average of deaths was 1,290. The first weeks of the year registered a higher number of deaths, especially week 2 (1,922) and week 1 (1,906). The weeks of the year with the fewest deaths were weeks 37 (1,025) and 36 (1,043), corresponding to the first half of September.

The average number of daily deaths in 2024 amounted for 184.5. The highest values were recorded on 17, 4 and 10 January (306, 303 and 302 deaths, respectively). The 25 days with the most daily deaths corresponded to January, exceeding 225 daily deaths. Daily deaths exceeded the figure of 250 on fifteen occasions in the month of January.
