Contributors and Affiliations to Social Security based on Contributors' Registered Place of Residence. 08/2026

The number of Social Security contributors in Catalonia increased by 94,800 people in August 2026 compared to the same month of the previous year, a 2.6% rise that brought the total to 3,772,925 people. Contributors increased in all counties and Aran, except in El Pallars Sobirà, where they decreased (−1.9%). The most notable increases, in relative terms, were in El Pla d’Urgell and El Baix Penedès (3.8% in both cases) and L’Urgell (3.6%).

Regarding the municipalities of Catalonia, the number of contributors increased or remained stable in 80% of the municipalities (759 municipalities) compared to the same month of the previous year, while it decreased in the rest (188 municipalities). All municipalities in Catalonia with 50,000 inhabitants and over saw an increase in the number of contributors compared to a year ago, except for Sant Cugat del Vallès, where it decreased by 0.1%. The increases were led, in relative terms, by L'Hospitalet de Llobregat (5.5%) and Santa Coloma de Gramenet (4.4%).

Compared to July, the number of contributors decreased by 23,150 people (−0.6%) in Catalonia as a whole and in 36 counties and Aran, led by El Pallars Sobirà (−4.5%), El Baix Empordà (−2.8%) and L’Alt Empordà (−2.4%). On the other hand, contributors remained stable in La Ribera d’Ebre and increased in 5 counties.

By sex, and compared to a year ago, the number of women Social Security contributors in Catalonia as a whole increased by 33,920 and that of men by 60,880, representing year-over-year increases of 2.0% and 3.1%, respectively.

In Catalonia as a whole, the number of contributors increased in all age groups, with the most notable increases among contributors aged under 30 and those aged 55 and over, at 4.5% in both cases.

Foreign national contributors grew by 12.8% in Catalonia as a whole compared to the same month of the previous year, and did so in all counties and Aran. Spanish national contributors grew in 15 counties and in Catalonia as a whole (0.2%).

The number of Social Security affiliations stood at 3,940,490 in August, a figure representing a 2.4% increase compared to a year ago.

By sector, affiliations in the services sector increased by 2.5% year-over-year and grew in all counties and Aran, except in El Pallars Sobirà. In industry, affiliations increased by 1.3% in Catalonia as a whole and in 37 counties. In the case of construction, affiliations increased by 2.1% in Catalonia as a whole and in 31 counties and Aran. Affiliations in agriculture increased by 3.2%, with 2,015 more affiliations than a year ago, and did so in 35 counties and Aran.

It should be noted that these variations may be affected by the fact that, from January 2026 onwards, the results of these statistics are presented under the new Catalan Classification of Economic Activities (CCAE-2025), which is a comprehensive revision of the previous classification structure (CCAE-2009), used for results until December 2025.

By type of working day, 18.9% of employee affiliations in August were part-time work. In the case of women, the proportion was 25.8%, more than double that of men (12.4%).

Regarding temporary contracts, the proportion of Social Security employee affiliations of a temporary nature stood at 10.3%. The counties with the highest level of temporary employment contract were El Pallars Jussà (15.0%) and El Pallars Sobirà (14.6%), and the one with the lowest level of temporary employment contract was El Baix Empordà (7.0%).
