Statistics on the Employability of University Graduates. SY 2023/24

The employability rate in Catalonia among graduates from Catalan universities in the school year 2023/2024 who were working in Catalonia one year after graduating stood at 64.5% (65.1% for women and 63.6% for men). Among graduates who resided in Catalonia employability was higher, standing up to 72.4%.

By disciplinary field, Engineering led the employability ranking with a rate of 68.2%, followed by Legal and social sciences (67.9%) and Health (63.3%). In contrast, Sciences (54.8%) and Humanities (53.1%) recorded rates below average.

Employability increases progressively over time. For graduates from the school year 2019/2020, the employability rate rose from 61.8% one year after graduating to 71.1% five years later. Among graduates residing in Catalonia, this percentage grew from 68.8% to 82.8% over the same period.

Idescat is publishing for the first time data on the duration of employability in Catalonia, specifically on the number of days in employment, the longest uninterrupted period in employment and the longest employment relationship.

Graduates from the school year 2023/2024 accumulated an average of 282 days in employment in Catalonia one year after graduating. Graduates in the field of Engineering spent the most days in employment (299 days), followed by graduates in the field of Legal and social sciences (289 days). In contrast, graduates in the field of Sciences accumulated the fewest days in employment, with 239 days, that is, 60 days fewer than for Engineering.

The average duration of the longest uninterrupted period in employment in Catalonia one year after graduation was 259 days for the school year 2023/2024, and the average duration of the longest employment relationship was 241 days.

As regards the salaried degree, 95.1% of graduates from the school year 2023/2024 were working as employees in Catalonia one year after graduation, a higher proportion among women (95.6%) than men (94.2%). By disciplinary field, there were no major differences concerning the salaried degree.

Regarding the level of part-time work, 23.1% of graduates from the school year 2023/2024 had a part-time contract in Catalonia one year after graduation (26.5% for women and 17.9% for men), with a higher incidence in the field of Humanities (37.4%) and a lower incidence in the field of Engineering (11.4%).

As for the level of temporary contract, 25.1% of salaried graduates in Catalonia from the school year 2023/2024 had a temporary contract one year after graduation (29.3% for women and 18.9% for men), a proportion that has fallen in recent years following the labour reform. The highest rate of temporary employment was in the field of Health (49.0%) and the lowest was in the field of Engineering (11.8%).

As for the level of adequacy to degree’s qualification of salaried graduates in Catalonia from the school year 2023/2024 one year after graduation, it stood at 40.7% (42.8% for women and 37.5% for men). Health was the field with the major adequacy, at 70.3%, while the field of Humanities (19.5%) recorded the lowest level.
