Names and Surnames of the Population. 2024

Of the total number of residents in Catalonia as of 1 January 2024 (8,012,231 people), Antonio and José, for men (85,593 and 79,430, respectively), and Maria/María and Montserrat, for women (84,803 and 73,843, respectively), are the most common given names among the population.

By counties, Antonio is the most frequent male name in El Baix Llobregat (27.36‰) and El Vallès Occidental (27.17‰), while the counties where it is less frequent are El Pla de l'Estany (8.49‰) and El Lluçanès (11.12‰). Despite being the most used name since 1960, it has experienced a progressive decrease in the Catalan population.

The most frequent male names from the three countries with the most foreign residents are: in first position, Mohamed in the case of Morocco (14,759 people), followed by Marco (781 people) in the case of Italy and, in third position, Andrés Felipe (642 people) in the case of Colombia.

As for female names, Maria/María stands out in El Priorat (36.22‰) and El Ripollès (33.62‰), and it is less common in El Baix Ebre (14.91‰) and El Montsià (16.75‰). In this case, the frequency of the name has decreased since 1960, although it peaked in the year 2000.

The most frequent female names from the three countries with the most foreign residents are: in first position, Fàtima/Fátima (5,794 people) in the case of Morocco, followed by Valentina (486 people) in the case of Colombia and, in third position, Maria/María (1,194 people) in the case of Romania.

As for surnames, Garcia/García, Martínez, López and Rodríguez are at the top of the list.
