Statistics on affiliates of foreign companies. 2022

There were 7,199 affiliates of foreign companies in Catalonia in 2022 which had a turnover of 163,282 million euros, representing an increase of 22.9% over the previous year. These affiliates employed 498,802 people, an increase of 5.7%, and generated gross value added (GVA) of 37,480 million euros, an increase of 15.2%.

By country, affiliates with a parent company in Germany generated the most GVA (7,298 million euros), which represents 19.5% of the total generated by affiliates with establishments in Catalonia. They were followed by affiliates with a parent company in the United States (with GVA of 5,127 million euros) and affiliates with a parent company in France (with GVA of 4,801 million euros). In terms of employment, affiliates with a parent company in Germany employed the most people (85,080 people, 17.1% of the total), followed in second place by affiliates with a parent company in France (with 78,338 people employed) and in third place by affiliates with a parent company in the United States (with 67,423 people employed).

Affiliates in the services sector accounted for 50.8% of the number of foreign company affiliates with establishments in Catalonia, trade for 35.3% and industry for the remaining 13.9%. Affiliates in the services sector also employed the most people (252,509), followed by industry (135,192 people) and finally trade (111,101 people). The turnover of industrial affiliates represented 45.6% of the turnover of the total number of affiliates of foreign companies with establishments in Catalonia, compared with 20.3% for those in trade and 39.0% for those in services. In terms of GVA, affiliates in the industrial sector generated the most (39.4%), followed by those in the services sector (39.0%) and those in trade (21.6%).

Affiliates of foreign companies represented 1.3% of the total number of companies with establishments in Catalonia in the sectors investigated but accounted for 31.4% of turnover, 28.0% of GVA and 18.6% of people employed.

The presence of affiliates was extremely significant in the case of larger companies (250 employees or more), which represented 40.2% of the total number of these companies with establishments in Catalonia.
