Territorial Gross Domestic Product 2022 and Municipalities of more than 50,000 inhabitants 2023 Advance

(In Catalan)In 2022, 214 of the 220 municipalities with more than 5,000 inhabitants and the other county capitals had positive GDP per inhabitant growth. Some of these municipalities grew by more than 25% (Súria, El Prat de Llobregat, Salou, Vilaseca, Torroella de Montgrí, La Canonja and Vacarisses) while the Catalan average was 9.5%.
La Canonja (118,579 euros per inhabitant) was the municipality with the highest GDP per capita in 2022, followed by Martorell (113,823 euros), Vandellòs i l’Hospitalet de l’Infant (112,028 euros) and Castellbisbal (110,555), while the Catalan average was 34,411 euros. At the other end of the scale, Badia del Vallès (8,456 euros), Santa Margarida de Montbui (10,687) and Cunit (11,284) were the municipalities with the lowest GDP per inhabitant.
By activity sector, there were 25 municipalities where industry was the main economic activity (including the four municipalities mentioned above) with the highest GDP per inhabitant. Other municipalities that also stood out for the weight of industry in their total GVA were Santa Margarida i els Monjos (77.7%), Guissona (77.2%) and Martorelles (74.0%).
In relation to the service sector, the municipalities in which this sector generated the highest percentage of total economic activity were Salou (94.9%), Calella (92.5%), Alella (92.4%), Sant Vicenç de Montalt (92.3%) and Altafulla (92.1%).
As for construction, the municipalities with the greatest weight of this sector in GVA were Deltebre (20%) and Santa Cristina d’Aro (17.1%). Finally, with regard to the agricultural sector, the municipalities with the highest weight of this sector in total municipal GVA were Alcarràs (18.8%), Sant Hilari Sacalm (13.2%), Almacelles (12.9%) and Alcanar (11.9%).
Compared to the previous year, all counties increased their GDP per inhabitant in 2022. Aran grew the most with respect to the previous year at 22.5% followed by L’Alta Ribagorça (15.8%). The lowest growth rates were in El Ripollès (3.8%) and La Ribera d’Ebre (2.1%).
La Ribera d’Ebre continued to have the highest GDP per inhabitant (61,419 euros) followed by El Barcelonès (42,134 euros), while at the other end of the scale was El Baix Penedès (18,515 euros).
With respect to economic activity sectors, the service sector was the main economic activity in 37 counties and Aran while industry was the main economic activity in four counties: La Ribera d’Ebre (71.4%), La Segarra (60.5%), La Terra Alta (51.4%) and La Conca de Barberà (46.9%). Construction generated more than 10% of economic activity in the counties of La Cerdanya (13%) and El Baix Empordà (10.3%). In the agricultural sector, the counties with the highest percentage of GVA in this sector were La Noguera (17.5%), Les Garrigues (13.0%) and El Pla d’Urgell (10.6%).
The advanced data for 2023 for municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants show that all municipalities had a positive evolution of GDP per inhabitant compared to the previous year led by El Prat de Llobregat (17.1%), while L’Hospitalet de Llobregat had the lowest positive evolution (5.2%). The municipalities with the highest GDP per capita values in 2023 were El Prat de Llobregat (76,024 euros), Sant Cugat del Vallès (57,635 euros), Barcelona (53,756 euros), Girona (45,953 euros) and Cornellà de Llobregat (45,773 euros), while the Catalan average was 37,013 euros.
