The population of Catalonia on 1 January 2024 amounted to 8,016,606 inhabitants, according to provisional data from the Population Estimates performed by Idescat. This figure represents an annual increase of 114,643 inhabitants (1.5%) compared to1 January 2023.
By age, the population aged 65 and over increased by 2.3% and the population aged 16 to 64 increased by 1.8%, while the population aged 0 to 15 decreased by 1.3%.
By provinces, Girona is where the population increased most in relative terms, with a growth of 1.6%. All provinces have positive growth.
In relation to the demographic indicators, the average age of the population is 43.53 years. There are 16.5 children aged 0 to 4 for every 100 women aged 15 to 49 (ratio of children to women of fertile age) and 29.2 people aged 65 and over for every 100 inhabitants aged 15 to 64 (old age dependency ratio).
The advanced results of Population Estimates are available for Catalonia and the provinces, by sex and age from year to year. The results of 1 July 2013 and 1 January 2024 are provisional and will remain valid until the first quarter of 2025, when Idescat replaces them with the definitive Population Estimates, which are calculated once the Population Census numbers for the 2024 are available.
