Statistics on Main Characteristics of the Population and Housing. Household and families. 2021

In Catalonia in 2021, there were 1,457.4 thousand married couples and 350.2 thousand common-law couples living together at home and 427.4 thousand single-parent households, according to the Statistics on Main Characteristics of the Population and Housing.

By nationality, 82.2% of marriages were made up of Spanish spouses, 10.1% were made up of foreign spouses and 7.8% were made up of one Spanish spouse and one foreign spouse. On the other hand, in 72.9% of the common-law couples both partners were Spanish, in 9.3% both were foreigners and in 17.8% one partner was Spanish and the other foreign.

Regarding the number of children under the age of 25 living at home, 51.9% of married couples had none, 20.5% had one, 21.5% had two and 6.1% had three or more. On the other hand, 53.1% of common-law couples had no children under the age of 25 living at home, 25.3% had one, 17.3% had two and 4.3% had three or more.

The number of same-gender couples living together at home was 34.2 thousand, of which 19.3 thousand were male couples and 14.9 thousand were female. Regarding the type of union, 18.3 thousand were married couples and 15.9 thousand were common-law couples. 9.8% of male couples and 43.0% of female couples had a child living with them in the household.

There were 427.4 thousand single-parent households, of which 335.8 thousand were mothers with children and 91.6 thousand were fathers with children. By nationality of the parents, 85.1% were Spaniards and 14.9% were foreigners. 38.9% of single-parent households had no children under the age of 25 living at home, 38.1% had one, 19.5% had two and 3.5% had three or more.
