Population and Housing Census 2021. Population in collective dwellings
The population registered in collective dwellings on 1 January 2021 was 76,379 persons (39,660 men and 36,719 women), according to the Population and Housing Census.
In the Population and Housing Census 2021, a resident in a collective dwelling is considered a person who is registered. This represents an important novelty with respect to the 2011 census, in which a person was counted as a resident in a collective dwelling if they were resident, regardless of their registration status. In relation to the Population and Housing Census 2011, the population registered in collective dwellings has increased by 29,476 inhabitants (62.8%).
By nationality, there were 46,151 Spaniards (18,529 men and 27,622 women) and 30,228 foreigners (21,131 men and 9,097 women).
The mean age of Spaniards in collective dwellings was 66.4 years (56.8 for men and 72.8 for women), while the mean age of foreigners was 32.7 years (32.4 for men and 33.4 for women).
The municipalities with the largest populations in collective dwellings are Barcelona (36,393 people), Vilanova i la Geltrú (2,274) and Lleida (1,872).
By type of dwelling, the largest number of people resided in residential homes and sheltered housing for the elderly (23,400 people, with a mean age of 84.2 years), in other social care institutions for people at risk of social exclusion or homeless people (22,849 people, with a mean age of 36.0 years) and in residential centres for people with disabilities (5,359 people, with a mean age of 51.6 years).
