Methodological note

The indicator measures the population trends of 17 butterfly species at EU-level and is presented as Index 2000 = 100 with smoothed values.

The indicator is based on data from 17 EU Member States (Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Ireland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Romania, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden), but with a limited number of long time series available. The bodies that provide the data are the European Environment Agency and Butterfly Conservation Europe (BCE), within the framework of the Assessing Butterflies in Europe (ABLE). The database the data are taken from is the European Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (BMS).

As for the indicator for Catalonia, the data measure the populations of 24 species, and the database the data are taken from is the catalan diurnal butterfly monitoring scheme (CBMS).
