Methodological note

International trade in goods statistics measure the value of goods traded between the EU Member States (intra-EU trade) and goods traded by the EU Member States with non-EU countries (extra-EU trade). Data for the Eurozone and the European Union consider only extra-EU trade. Data for countries consider both intra and extra-EU trade.

Extra-EU exports of goods are goods which leave the statistical territory of the European Union for a third country. Intra-EU exports of goods are goods which leave a Member State of the EU for another Member State.

Extra-EU imports are goods which enter the statistical territory of the European Union from a third country. Intra-EU imports of goods are those that enter a Member State and come from another Member State.

The coverage rate measures the ratio between exports and imports made during a reference period and a certain economic space.

The statistical information is mainly provided by the traders on the basis of Customs (extra-EU) and Intrastat (intra-EU) declarations. The Member States collect, compile and transmit international trade in goods statistics to Eurostat in line with the legislation in force. Discrepancies between Eurostat data and national data may exist due to the application of different concepts and definitions. More information can be found in the User guide on European statistics on international trade in goods.
