PENP

These statistics have a specific section with all the information available: Statistics on Planning Deployment in Protected Natural Areas (PENP).

Methodological note

The indicator measures the surface of marine protected areas (MPAs) in EU marine waters. It comprises nationally designated protected areas (areas protected by state legislation) and Natura 2000 sites (marine and terrestrial protected areas designated under the EU Habitats and Birds Directives, to maintain or restore a favourable conservation status for habitat types and species of EU interest).

With respect to Catalonia's indicator, in 2014 the State included several large marine areas within the Natura 2000 network.
