Methodological note
The indicator measures European mean near-surface temperature deviations compared to the 1850-1899 average (pre-industrial period). Monitoring of the data is carried out using standardised measurements, quality control and homogeneity procedures to ensure the compatibility and comparability of the recorded data.
Data for this indicator are published by the European Environment Agency, based on Met Office Hadley Centre and Climatic Research Unit (HadCRUT4).
Catalonia: The HadCRUT5 (i) and E-OBS ver23.1e (ii) databases provide high spatial resolution gridded datasets, the first offering global coverage and the second being limited to the European continent. The indicator is calculated using the grid points over Catalonia. In the case of the SMCT_v3 (iii) database, the indicator is generated from 26 different climate series distributed throughout the region, provided by the Meteorological Service of Catalonia.
The reference period used to obtain the annual mean near-surface temperature deviation (or anomaly) differs depending on the database. For (i), the reference period is 1850-1899 (pre-industrial period), while for (ii) and (iii), the reference period is 1961-1990.
Consequently, the datasets for Catalonia from database (i) are comparable with those of the European Union.
