Methodological note
The Indicators of Service Sector Activity (IASS) measure the short-term evolution of the activity of companies operating in the service sectors in Catalonia. The activities included in the Trade, Transport and storage, Accommodation and food service activities, Information and communications, Professional, scientific and technical activities and Administrative and support service activities sectors according to the Catalan Classification of Economic Activities 2009 (CCAE-2009).
These indicators reflect changes in one of the most important sectors of the Catalan economy, through the turnover variable. Turnover includes the amounts billed by companies for the provision of services and sale of goods, as part of the companies' business operations. They are accounted for including taxes attributable to goods and services, except for VAT, which is borne by customers.
The turnover index (IASSVN) is produced by Idescat based on data provided by the National Statistical Institute (INE). Idescat disseminates the information related to Commercial and Non-commercial sectors. In addition, for the Non-commercial IASSVN, a disaggregation is obtained for the sectors Transport and storage, Accommodation and food service activities, Information and communications, Professional, scientific and technical activities and Administrative and support service activities. The results are presented as an index with the purpose of measuring the variation in relation to base 2021.
Starting in 2021, the INE has made changes to how the IASS is disseminated in order to standardise it with the one produced by Eurostat and enable users to analyse them together. In accordance with Regulation 2019/2152 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 November 2019 on short-term business statistics and European Commission Implementing Regulation 2020/1197 of 30 July 2020, the indices are published with the new 2021 base while following the CCAE-2009. Linked series are offered from 2005.
The change of basis entails an expansion of the scope of the statistics, which includes new indices for certain economic activities and the implementation of a new statistical unit (economic activity unit) which replaces the legal unit. It also affects the branches investigated, the basket of goods, the weightings and the sample of the reporting units, in addition to incorporating quantitative and methodological improvements.
The indices are calculated using a chained Laspeyres methodology with weightings updated each year starting from the base year (2021) according to information from the Annual Services Survey and the Annual Trade Survey and other existing administrative sources with statistical purposes such as the State Agency for Tax Administration (AEAT) and the General Treasury of Social Security.
These indicators are obtained from a continuous survey that examines monthly around 5,000 economic activity units in the 2021 base operating in these sectors in Catalonia.
The data for the last four months are provisional.
