Methodological note

The statistics for technological content (R&D) of industrial products in foreign trade is based on the most recent classification drawn up by the Eurostat of industrial sectors by research and development (R&D) effort. These statistics classify flows of exported and imported goods by the importance of their technological content.

The technological content of an industrial sector is identified by calculating R&D spending as a percentage of the sector's production volume. The concept also takes into not only the sector's own technological effort (direct R&D intensity) but also the technology built into its purchases of intermediate goods and equipment (indirect intensity). This new classification makes it possible to compare the statistical information that it is generated nationally with the one generated in Europe.

The result had been an aggregation of the industrial sectors of the Classificació catalana d'activitats econòmiques 2009 (NACE-Rev 2) in four groups according to its technological intensity: high technological level, high medium, medium low and low. These groups are divided by exports or imports to the European Union of the 27 or to the rest of the world. The values corresponding to Catalonia and Spain are generated.

Idescat has revised the series of exports and imports of industrial products since the first quarter of 1994, following the Classification of products by technological content Eurostat.
