Methodological note
Definition of concepts
- Marriage
- Legal union of two people of the opposite sex, determined by civil, religious or other means determinated by the national laws of a country. On July 3, 2005 Law 13/2005, of July 1 came into force, which allows marriages between people of the same sex.
- Crude marriage rate
- Ratio between the number of weddings in a certain year and the population halfway through the period. Expressed in so many per thousand.
Methodological aspects
The Marriages Statistics provide information on the number and characteristics of the marriages of residents of Catalonia entered into during a given year.
The Marriages Statistics provides annual information on marriages and spouses who take up residence in Catalonia, according to demographic, social and territorial characteristics.
The statistics are compiled based on the data from the registration of marriages in the Civil Register. The data include all marriages that establish their residence in Catalonia, both those registered in the civil registers of Catalonia and those registered in the civil registers of other autonomous communities. In 2011 and previous years, the data refer only to registrations in Catalonia of marriages that established their habitual residence in Catalonia.
