Methodological note

Definition of concepts

Occupancy rate by rooms
Ratio, as a percentage, between the average number of rooms occupied a day per month and the total number of rooms available.
Occupancy rate by places
Ratio, as a percentage, between the total number of places occupied per month and those available in the campsite for the period under analysis.
Overnight stay
Each of the nights that a traveller stays in an establishment used for collective accommodation or in a private form of tourist accommodation.
Traveller
Person who moves outside of their usual environment. Travellers are classified by their place of residence, which in the case of residents of Spain is the autonomous community they usually reside in. The term traveller in the occupancy section is used as a synonym of tourist or a person that stays for at least one night in any form of accommodation.

Methodological aspects

The tourist accommodation occupancy surveys by INE are one of the statistical sources for measuring tourist activity. The main objective is to ascertain the behaviour of a series of variables which make it possible to describe the basic characteristics of this type of accommodation in the tourism sector: travellers, overnight stays and occupancy rate.

The surveys are aimed at hotel establishments, campsites and rural tourism accommodations registered in the registry of the General Directorate of Tourism and which can be viewed in the lists of tourist establishments published by the Ministry of Business and Labour.
