Methodological aspects

The source for the natural population movement is declarations made in the Civil Register at the moment of registering a birth, death or marriage, when a statistical report of the event is provided. The data in this publication exclusively refers to registrations made in Catalonia regarding people residing there. The territorial breakdown is made by places of residence: for births, that of the mother; for deaths, that of the deceased; and for marriages, the place where the couple establishes a residence.

The original source for the data on deaths by cause of death is the statistical bulletins on deaths taken from the civil registers of Catalonia. Since 1983, the Department of Health has been responsible for selecting and coding basic causes of death.
