Methodological note

The basic information about population as of 1 January and the population structure indicators is obtained from the Population Estimates.

The Population Estimates is the statistical operation produced every six months which provides the headcount of the population residing in Catalonia and its distribution by sex and age as of 1 January and 1 July since 1981.

From 2021 onwards, the Population Estimates as of 1 January of each year correspond to the data of Population Census (which becomes annual), on the same date. The Population Estimates as of 1 July are calculated based on the Population Estimates as of 1 January of 2 consecutive years.

Idescat prepares Advanced Population Estimates as of 1 January and 1 July, with the aim of providing a calculation of the population with the minimum delay with respect to the reference date. The results remain valid until each year they are replaced by the final Population Estimates, once the results of the annual Population Census are available.

For further information about these statistics, you may check the methodology.
