People at risk of relative poverty are considered to be those with income per unit of consumption below 60% of the average (for Catalonia and Spain) income per unit of consumption (modified OECD scale).

The number of units of consumption in a household is calculated using the modified OECD scale, which assigns a weight of 1 to the first person aged 14 and over, a weight of 0.5 to the remaining persons aged 14 and over, and a weight of 0.3 to persons under 14.

The equivalent disposable income corresponds to the income per consumption unit where the number of consumption units in a household is calculated using the modified OECD scale, which assigns a weight of 1 to the first person aged 14 and over, a weight of 0.5 to the remaining persons aged 14 and over and a weight of 0.3 to persons aged 14 and under.

The income used in the calculation of this indicator corresponds to the year prior to that of the survey.

Households with severe material deprivation are considered to be those lacking at least 7 of the following 13 items:

to pay housing-related expenses without delay (mortgage or rent, gas bills, community fees,....) or of postponed purchases.
to keep the household adequately warm.
to cover unexpected expenses.
to eat meat, fish or a protein equivalent every second day.
to take a week holiday away from home.
to have access to a car/van for personal use.
to replace broken or worn out furniture.
to replace worn out clothes with new ones.
to have two pairs of suitably fitting shoes.
to spend a small amount of money each week on oneself (“pocket money”).
to practice regular leisure activities.
to meet friends/family for a drink/meal at least once a month.
to have an Internet connection.

People with low work intensity are defined as the percentage of the population aged 0 to 64 living in households where adults worked a working day equal to or less than 20% of their total potential working time during the previous year.

People of working age are individuals aged 18 to 64 (except for students aged 18 to 24, pensioners or retired people, as well as inactive people aged between 60 and 64 where the main source of household income is pensions). This variable does not apply in the case of people aged 65 and over.

The data for Spain according to the autonomous poverty line are calculated by applying 60% of the average income of the autonomous community of residence to the population of each autonomous community.
