Standardised death rate by age. 2020-2024
Idescat publishes the standardised death rate (SDR) by age for the period 2020–2024. For this period, the SDR for Catalonia was 809 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, a value that follows the downward trend of the last two periods (2019-2023 and 2018-2022).
In Catalonia, the SDR decreased compared to the two previous periods, with a value very close to the minimum value of the 2015-2019 period, prior to COVID-19.
Regarding the areas of the Territorial Plan, the Metropolitan Area (793) had a lower SDR than the average for Catalonia. By contrast, the SDR was higher in the areas of Ponent (832), the Central Counties (852), Les Terres de l'Ebre (856) and El Penedès (859). In the areas of L'Alt Pirineu i Aran and the Girona Counties the standardised death rate did not differ significantly from the average for Catalonia.
By sex, the SDR was 1,055 deaths per 100,000 men and 631 deaths per 100,000 women. The Central Counties Area, El Penedès Area and Ponent Area had male death rates significantly higher than the average. As for female death rates, a significantly higher SDR was recorded in the areas of Les Terres de l'Ebre, El Penedès and the Central Counties. By contrast, the Metropolitan Area had a significantly lower female death rate.
By age, an SDR of 139 per 100,000 inhabitants aged 0 to 64 years and an SDR of 3,574 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants aged 65 years and over were recorded. By areas, the Metropolitan Area had a lower death rate for both age groups, in contrast to the areas of Les Terres de l'Ebre, Ponent and El Penedès , which recorded a significantly higher death rate in both age groups. El Camp de Tarragona Area had a higher SDR only for the age group under 65, whereas the Central Counties Area recorded a significantly higher SDR only in the group over 65 age.
By counties, the significantly lower SDRs corresponded to Aran (705) and El Barcelonès (772), while El Moianès (979), El Ripollès (891) and El Solsonès (889) top the list of the 20 counties that recorded an SDR significantly higher than the average.
Finally, by municipalities, Reus (898), Sant Boi de Llobregat (863) and Castelldefels (854) recorded the highest SDRs, whereas Cerdanyola del Vallès (705), Sant Cugat del Vallès (707) and Esplugues de Llobregat (711) had significantly lower SDRs.
The standardised death rate (SDR) by age corresponds to the number of deaths (per 100,000 inhabitants) that occur within a given territory according to its own the death rate by sex and age and with the age structure of a standard population.
