Statistics on Commuting for Non-University Studies. SY 2024/25
In the 2024/2025 school year, there were 1,223,585 enrolled non-university students studying and residing in Catalonia. Of these, 81.3% (994,170) studied in the same municipality where they resided, while 18.7% (229,415) studied in another municipality in Catalonia.
The counties that recorded the highest percentage of students who studied and resided in the same municipality were El Barcelonès (91.7%), El Segrià (84.1%), El Vallès Occidental (82.6%) and El Montsià (82.0%). Conversely, the counties with the lowest percentage were El Priorat (57.2%) and El Pallars Sobirà (54.8%).
Among municipalities with a population of over 5,000 inhabitants, Lleida and Barcelona retained the highest proportion of resident students in relative terms (96.9% and 96.5%, respectively). Conversely, there were three municipalities where fewer than half of the students studied in the municipality of residence: El Catllar (38.5%), Santa Cristina d’Aro (38.5%) and Sant Antoni de Vilamajor (24.5%).
With regard to the number of students studying in a given municipality, i.e., local study places, L’Arboç (67.5%) and Cabrera de Mar (57.7%) were the municipalities with the highest percentage of students from other municipalities.
By level of education, 91.2% of second-cycle early childhood education students who studied and resided in Catalonia studied in their municipality of residence, while 8.8% studied in a different municipality. Within compulsory education, the percentage of students who studied in the same municipality where they resided was 89.8% in primary education and 84.5% in the case of compulsory secondary education. With regard to post-compulsory education, the proportion of resident students who studied in the same municipality was 75.5% for the baccalaureate (upper secondary education), 45.5% for intermediate vocational training programmes and 37.3% for higher vocational training programmes.
