These statistics have a specific section with all the information available: Statistics on Cause of Death (CMORT).
Methodological note
Causes of death (COD) statistics are based on information derived from the medical certificate of cause of death. COD target at the underlying cause of death, i.e. "the disease or injury which initiated the train of morbid events leading directly to death, or the circumstances of the accident or violence which produced the fatal injury". This definition has been adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Causes of death are classified by the 86 causes of the European shortlist of causes of death. This shortlist is based on the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD10).
Main causes of death are corresponding to the following ICD10 codes:
- Circulatory system: I00–I99
- Malignant neoplasms: C00–C97
- Transport accidents: V01–V99, Y85
The data for Catalonia are obtained from the Catalan Mortality Register, Information Management and Analysis Service for Strategic Planning, Directorate-General for Health Planning.
