The Programme for International Student Assessment uses a scoring system where there is no maximum or minimum score but rather results are scaled to fit normal distributions with means of 500 points and standard deviations of 100 points. There are reading literacy and mathematics proficiency scales to help interpret these scores:

Below level 1c: score less than 189.33
Level 1c: score between 189.33 and 262.03
Level 1b: score between 262.04 and 334.74
Level 1a: score between 334.75 and 407.46
Level 2: score between 407.47 and 480.17
Level 3: score between 480.18 and 552.88
Level 4: score between 552.89 and 625.60
Level 5: score between 625.61 and 698.31
Level 6: score greater than 698.31

A person attains at least reading literacy proficiency level 2 when they can identify the main idea in a piece of text of moderate length, understand the connection between the parts, construe meaning within a limited part of the text by producing basic inferences, locate one or more pieces of information based on multiple, partly implicit criteria, reflect on the overall or specific purpose of the text, compare claims and evaluate the reasons supporting them by making connections between the text and outside knowledge.

Below level 1: score less than 357.77
Level 1: score between 357.77 and 420.06
Level 2: score between 420.07 and 482.37
Level 3: score between 482.38 and 544.67
Level 4: score between 544.68 and 606.98
Level 5: score between 606.99 and 669.29
Level 6: score greater than 669.29

A person attains at least mathematics proficiency level 2 when they can understand and recognise situations in contexts that require no more than direct inference, extract relevant information from a single source and make use of a single representational mode, employ basic algorithms, formulae, procedures or conventions to solve problems involving integers and are capable of direct reasoning and making literal interpretations of the results.
